Mission and Values
The mission of the Latino Center of the Midlands is to enhance the lives of the Heartland Latino Community by supporting the education and development of our youth and adults; promoting comprehensive engagement of our families in all facets of their lives; and by fostering leadership through a variety of services and activities.
Department Summary
This program area has grown and evolved in recent years, adding in-home case management, nutrition, and health services to our longtime drop-in assistance services. We help people with translation and interpretation, job applications, finding legal and financial assistance, and accessing affordable health care. This program area includes Siembra Salud (growing wellness), a home-gardening program that includes nutrition and health education classes. It also includes the Strengthening Families parent-child education program and our Healthy Kids Club, a fun health-education class for children. We serve almost 1,200 people through Family & Community Well-Being each year.
VISTA Position Summary
The Latino Community Health and Wellness VISTA will help the Latino Center continue to grow and develop health and wellness services.
The VISTA will learn about South Omaha, the longtime home of the city’s diverse immigrant communities.
The VISTA will research programming models, gather and report community needs, and help develop and implement a formal model using best practices from research.
The VISTA will also help in developing measurement and evaluation tools.

Founded in 1971 as a small community center, today the Latino Center of the Midlands is a growing hub of education, wellness, and opportunity for Omaha’s Latino community. Our mission is to enhance the lives of the Heartland Latino Community by supporting the education and development of our youth and adults, promoting comprehensive engagement of our families in all facets of their lives, and by fostering leadership through a variety of services and activities.
Why VISTA at LCM?
This VISTA will bring unique health and wellness programming and organizational capacity to the Latino community in Greater Omaha that is culturally relevant, linguistically fluent, and accessible.
The VISTA will support the Family & Community Well-Being program area by collaborating with experts in health and wellness to provide clients with tools necessary to live healthy, self-sufficient, and fulfilling lives.
The VISTA will research culturally-relevant and evidence-based programs, solicit community feedback, create curricula, complete fidelity checks, and develop evaluation processes.
The end result will be a comprehensive program manual for Siembra Salud, Healthy Kids Club, and other health and well-being programs.
Monthly living stipend and educational award after completion of program will be provided.
