Omaha, Neb., March 27, 2017 – 500 high school students will engage in a variety of career experiences at the Latino Center of the Midlands (LCM) on April 3-6, 2017 as part of the Greater Omaha Chamber’s first annual Careerockit initiative.

Careerockit is a program of the Greater Omaha Chamber and is supported by community partners. It joins the business and community sectors to help meet current and future talent needs. Latino Center of the Midlands will be the host site to 11 businesses providing educational and valuable hands-on career experiences to 9th-12th grade students from Bryan High School, South High School, and Bellevue West High School. Students in attendance include those participating in the LCM’s Pathways to Success program and students currently enrolled in industry-related classes at South High School.

During the four-day event, students will learn from career experts in the fields of culinary arts, criminal justice, electrical technician/auto mechanics, information technology, healthcare, construction, and education.  Business partners in each career area will employ engaging, hands-on strategies to facilitate three, 45-minute block rotations. Heartland Workforce Solutions, who now provides services at the Latino Center of the Midlands, will host one rotation during each section to support additional insight into students’ career path.

“We are very excited to be part of the Careerockit initiative as it allows us to invest in our young people today by widening their career choices and knowledge,” said Albert Varas, Executive Director of the Latino Center of the Midlands. “When the business and community sectors join forces our students succeed and are better prepared for their educational future and the job market. In the end, they become a strong and engaged community.  It’s a win-win situation for all of us,” said Varas.

Careerockit will offer thousands of career experiences to students across Omaha between April 1-8, 2017.   Students attending the Careerockit experience at the Latino Center of the Midlands will have their names entered in a drawing for a Chromebook and other prizes.
