From Insurance to Penguins: Siembra Nebraska Interns Share their Internship Stories

A chair. A custom T-shirt. A video.

Those weren’t just presentation props—they were proof of a summer spent creating, learning, and stepping into careers that once felt unfamiliar.

On the final day of the Siembra Nebraska Internship Program, interns gathered with host site supervisors, peers, and the Siembra Nebraska team to share their capstone projects. One by one, their presentations revealed just how different a summer in Siembra Nebraska could look.

One intern walked the audience through the world of insurance and the lessons they learned about serving clients. Another shared what it was like to help care for penguins at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium . At Homewoven, interns proudly displayed a chair they built during their internship. An intern from Mio Tees showcased custom T-shirt designs they had printed, while the Latino Center Communications interns premiered a video they produced over the summer.

Every project told a different story.

Interns stepped into unfamiliar careers, found their confidence, connected with customers, and worked through real-world challenges. By the end of the summer, they walked away with real world experience and a clearer sense of their future.

For the host site supervisors in the audience, it was a chance to see how their mentorship shaped each intern’s journey. For the interns, it was an opportunity to celebrate and recognize how much they had accomplished in a single summer.

Programs like Siembra Nebraska don’t just introduce students to careers—they help strengthen the future workforce by giving young people the opportunity to gain real-world experience, build confidence, and develop skills alongside employers who are invested in preparing the next generation of professionals.

As the presentations came to an end, the projects were packed away and conversations continued. The internship season may have ended, but the skills, confidence, and experiences these interns gained will continue with them as they take their next steps toward their careers.
